NEPTUNE LUT

If you are struggling with achieving a cinematic look consistently and nearly effortlessly, I have something for you: NEPTUNE LUT.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, see it in action:

I built NEPTUNE LUT to be used as an overall look, to achieve consistency across your project.

It is built with color science principles —not color correction tools— which means you will grade faster and achieve better results that are simply not possible with the tools available in Davinci Resolve.

And what's more important: it won't break anything. I've stressed tested it across several test charts plus lots of different shots to make sure it looks good and it's not breaking anything.

I also have my bundle pack that includes all my LUTS at a discounted price:

What's included?

  • 1 x NEPTUNE LUT (.cube file) designed to work in Davinci Wide Gammut (DWG)
  • 1 x Sony in-camera LUT, so you can import NEPTUNE directly into your Sony camera:
    • Sony S-Log3/Sony S-Gammut3.Cine -> Rec.709/Gamma2.4
  • 1 x Color Space Transform LUTs:
    • Sony S-Log3/Sony S-Gammut3.Cine -> DWG
  • 3 x Bonus Conversion LUTs (DRTs):
    • DWG -> Rec.709/Gamma2.2
    • DWG -> Rec.709/Gamma2.4
    • DWG -> Rec.2020[P3 Limited]/ST2048 PQ 1000 nits (for HDR workflows)

How to use them?

It's designed in Davinci Wide Gammut so my personal recommendation is to color grade in Davinci Resolve. However, it's all .cube files so they're supported by any other editor compatible with these kinds of LUTs.

I normally use one grading group per source. For example, if I'm filming with my Sony in S-Log3, I'll have a single overall group with the following arrangement:

  • PRE Clip: conversion LUT from S-Log3 to DWG
  • Clip: grading adjustments for each individual clip (exposure, white balance, etc)
  • POST Clip: NEPTUNE LUT + conversion LUT from DWG to Rec.709 (or Rec.2020 if it's an HDR workflow)

FAQ

Can I import it directly into my Sony camera?

Yes, all you have to do is importing the sony-neptune-lut.cube into your camera. Note that the in-camera reproduction might differ to the final grade since the cameras might downsample it. This LUT is optimised for post production color grading.

Are they compatible with any other camera? And iPhone?

Yes, you can use Neptune to grade from any other input color space. Simply add a Color Space Transform that converts to Davinci Wide Gammut (or a manufacturer LUT to DWG). The rule of thumb is that as long as the input to the Neptune LUT is DWG, any source or transformation upwards is valid.

Same applies to iPhone footage in Apple Log or Apple Log 2.

Can I use the Sony to Rec.709 LUT to grade directly?

Yes, but note that that LUT is only 33 points, and the rest of them are 65 points LUTs (Sony only supports 33 point LUTs in camera). I'd highly encourage you to use my recommended pipeline detailed above, but yes, it's can be done if you want a simpler workflow.

Can I use another DRT or conversion LUT to Rec.709/Rec.2020?

Yes, absolutely! However, it's been validated against the ones I'm including so if you want to achieve the same results as in the demo video (and my Youtube videos), those are the ones that have been used. But feel free to experiment!

Are the DRTs the same as in my other digital products?

No, each product has its own set of DRTs specifically for that LUT. However, you can exchange them freely if you like the result.
